Chelsea hero Claude Makelele explains why Jose Mourinho is struggling to manage Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial

Former Chelsea star Claude Makelele believes has been worn down by the modern generation of stars.

Mourinho has struggled to consistently get the best out of Makelele’s compatriots and Anthony Martial, both of whom are reported to have fallen out with their manager.

Makelele was an essential component of Mourinho’s Chelsea side that knocked ’s Invincibles off their perch during his first spell at Stamford Bridge and won back-to-back Premier League titles.

The France international believes that Chelsea side was packed full of inspirational and domineering personalities, the type of which is currently lacking in the United dressing room.

‘I learned a lot with Jose,’ Makelele told The Sun ahead of United’s clash with Watford.

‘But at Chelsea he had players like me, John Terry, Frank Lampard.

‘Now it is different. This generation is not the same.

‘It has made him tired. He has gone through generation after generation after generation of players.

‘Each one is different and maybe he misses the earlier generation. But he still works hard.’
