Killing man-eater will be last resort: Hyd nawab

HYDERABAD: Shafat Ali Khan, the secretary of Tranquil Force, who is now stationed in forests, is on the lookout for a man-eater tigress, T1, and two cubs.

He told TOI on Wednesday that he would make all efforts to tranquilise the tigress and, only as a last resort, shoot it down, if it becomes necessary.

The orders of office of chief conservator for forest, Yavatmal, to shoot down the tigress has led to controversy.

Nawab Shafat took part in around 24 operations of man-animal conflict resolution, of which in five cases he tranquilised the wild animals. In 19 of the cases, he had shot them dead.

In the order dated September 10, Nawab Shafat was directed to tranquilise the cubs and shift them to the rescue centre and also tranquilise and capture the tigress. But if efforts were unsuccessful, he was asked to shoot the tigress to avoid further human loss Pandarkawada division.

Nawab Shafat told TOI, “The tigress has killed 14 people. High Court stayed the first order of shooting. A second order issued. Supreme Court confirmed that it should be tranquilised and, if not possible, eliminated.

“I am the only authorised tranquiliser for wild animals. On Tuesday, I reached Yavatmal and two elephants were brought from to assist me. The tigress has two cubs aged 10 months, which are also eating human flesh. The killing of humans is easy prey, as there is no natural prey such as spotted deer and sambar and wild board here. So, the tigress is killing humans for survival.”

AK Misra, chief wildlife warden of , in his order issued to Yavatmal forest officials, stated, “In August, three persons were killed by the tigress.

“In camera traps, T1 has been spotted. In another kill, pug marks of the tigress and cubs were spotted few metres away from the kill. All three cases occurred within a span of 24 days.”

Misra’s report also stated that tranquilising efforts were not successful earlier due to the terrain that restricts movement of vehicles inside the forest. Even the deep gorges limit the movement of staff.
