Leesville Road holds off Garner‘s fourth quarter comeback to win 26-24

Leesville Road held off Garner‘s fourth quarter comeback effort to take down the Trojans 26-24 on Wednesday night.

The game was moved up because of Hurricane Florence‘s expected impact on the area.

“It is difficult when it comes to recovery,” Leesville Road head coach Chad Smothers said postgame. “It affects your game plan because you can only do so much with one and a half practices.”

Garner scored the first points of the game when a snap went over the Leesville’s punters head and flew over the back of the end zone to give the Trojans a early 2-0 lead in the game.

The Pride responded in the second quarter. Vince Amendola found Noah Burnette in the corner of the end zone to give Leesville a 7-2 lead.

Amendola used his legs to find paydirt later in the quarter. The senior quarterback faked the handoff and sprinted through the middle of the Trojans defense to score from 40-yards out and increase the Leesville lead to 15-2.

With 16 seconds left in the half Nolan McLean found Darious Boone who weaved his way through the Prides defense and into the end zone for a 31-yard touchdown to make it 15-9.

Leesville scored its third touchdown when David Sohn powered in from three yards out and the Pride converted another two-point conversion and later in the game Burnette was able to kick a 38-yard field goal through the uprights to go up 26-9 on Garner.

The Trojans began to comeback in the fourth quarter. McLean tossed a 12-yard touchdown to Spencer Stephenson, and on Garner‘s next possession he found Daiveon Carrington for a 15-yard touchdown to cut the deficit down to two.

Garner had one last chance, but McLean was sacked on third down on the Pride‘s 30-yard line and then spiked the ball on fourth to turn the ball over back to Leesville and seal the win.

“We have no idea what the ramifications of this hurricane will be and we certainly hope everyone will come out of this thing ok.” Smothers said about Florence.

If the weather cooperates, Leesville Road is set to take on Cardinal Gibbons at home next Friday night for its conference opener, and Garner is scheduled to play Rolesville at home.
